There is something so magical about mornings. It’s the beginning of a brand new day, a blank page, a clean slate that contains nothing + is filled with possibilities. It’s the perfect time to begin again with clarity, gratitude + presence so that we can navigate our day with intention, ease + joy.

Creating a morning ritual is about taking time for ourselves first thing, creating space to get centered + preparing our body, mind + heart for whatever the day may bring.

Here are some suggestions on where to start + how to create an authentic, beyoutifulliving morning ritual for yourself:

Create a Space That Feels Good

Find a space that you can make your own + decorate it in a way that feels good. Maybe it’s a space with candles, fresh flowers, plants, an altar, your yoga mat. Or maybe it’s a desk that’s clean + inviting for you to sit down + write. Make a space that keeps you inspired + coming back for more.

Ask Yourself How You Want to Feel

Having a morning ritual is a powerful way to begin your day feeling the way you most want to feel. Ask yourself how you most want to feel every day + write down 3-5ish words. Here are my current words as an example: CONNECTED. EXPANSIVE. INSPIRED. JOY. MAGIC. CLARITY. And then ask yourself what you will do to feel the way you want to feel. For example, to feel a sense of clarity, my morning ritual is a blend of meditation, journaling + yoga. To feel inspired, I’m going to spend some time by the water today on my lunch break. To feel connected, I’m going to go hiking with a group of girlfriends this weekend. Craft your morning in a way that brings light to how you want to feel + what you will do the rest of the day (and week) to feel that way.

Move Your Body

Make your workouts part of your daily morning ritual if you like. If you’re using the Weekly Schedule, it can work really well to do your yoga/workout video for that day first thing in the morning. Then perhaps you do the suggested run/walk/cardio portion on your lunch break or in the evening. (Or the other way around!) It may help to lay out your workout clothes + gear the night before, ready for you to get moving first thing in the morning.

Meditate, Set Intentions + Visualize

Your morning ritual could be getting out of bed + going to sit down on your meditation cushion. There are some meditations in the library (with more to come) + I also recommend the Insight Timer app. You might also recite your Weekly Mantra as you sit in stillness + contemplation. Then write in your journal any intentions you have for the day. Maybe you visualize how the rest of your day + week goes, feeling the way you want to feel.

Read From a Book of Daily Meditations

Reading a short, inspiring message every morning can be just what you need to start the day with awareness + intention. Below are some of my go-to’s:

+ The Woman’s Book of Confidence: Meditations for Strength and Inspiration by Sue Patton Thoele

+ Journey To The Heart: Daily Meditations on the Path to Freeing Your Soul by Melody Beattie

+ Meditations from the Mat: Daily Reflections on the Path of Yoga by Rolf Gates

+ Stillness Speaks by Eckhart Tolle

Make It Your Own

What makes you feel most like you, most alive + connected? What brings you a sense of clarity? What lights you up + gets you ready for your day? What makes you feel the way you most want to feel? It could be reading, singing, dancing, gardening, cooking, painting, running, spending time with your dog in nature. It could be a cup of coffee + a journal. It could be breaking a sweat. Find your flow, craft your morning like a piece of art + enjoy it, your way. An amazing cappuccino can be just as sacred as silent seated meditation. Make your own rules + let it be authentic + sacred to you.

Schedule It + Set Your Alarm Earlier

Make it a point to carve out time in your busy schedule every morning. Schedule it or it won’t happen. Set your alarm 15-60 minutes (or however much time you need) earlier + get your butt out of your cozy, warm bed. If you’re not a morning person, remind yourself that being uncomfortable is where the magic happens. You will not regret taking that time for your well-being before your day begins.
